Waiters, bartenders and taxi drivers all expect a tip of at least
10%. Porters expect Rs.10-15. In restaurants tips are pooled and
shared by all the working staff. If you are in doubt about whether or not you are supposed to tip - do it.

Shaking hands and exchanging names is how people will usually greet each other.
The traditional way of greeting, however, is to join two palms,
keeping parallel to the body and saying 'namaste'. Traditional
custom of honouring and respecting the guests is still maintained.
People of India get very friendly once engaged in communication.

For business meetings, men wear business suites and women prefer
sarees. Informal gatherings and restaurants do not mostly have
stipulated dress code. Skimpily dressed women would be stared at.
Wear loose cloths and you won't feel uncomfortable.
In most homes you must take off your shoes before entering. Footwear
should never be worn in temples and mosques. A pile of shoes at the
door will tell you!!

Smoking is prohibited largely in public places such as restaurants,
food shops, hospitals, mass public transport and public transport
terminals, temples, hospitals and schools. If you are a smoker,
exercise your discretion and sensitivity when selecting a place in
which to smoke. Alcoholic drinks are strictly prohibited in the
state of Gujarat. So, no bars, no booze !! However, if you are a
traveller to this state, you can have exclusive permits made. The same
can be procured at a nominal price at the airports and the prohibition
office on producing your passport. You are still prohibited to consume such
drinks in public places.
